Bal at the Opera – post-premiere performances

From seemingly separate scenes of Tuwim's famous poem, he builds a poignant panorama of society, in which the pomp and carefreeness of the elites contrast with the poverty, anxiety and drama of ordinary people. Created at the twilight of the interwar period, the work is a sharp satire on the mechanisms of power, the hypocrisy of the elites and deepening social inequalities. At the center of events is a lavish ball – a gathering of aristocracy, military officers and the bourgeoisie – while outside the walls of the opera, social tensions are growing and moods are emerging that lead toward catastrophe. The uncompromising nature of the poem meant that after its completion it met with sharp opposition from the Sanation authorities. Jerzy Satanowski's music brings out the rhythm, emotionality and extraordinary power of Tuwim's language, while Artur Barciś's interpretation emphasizes the relevance of this outstanding text. "Bal w operze" remains not only a brilliant satire, but also a penetrating story about the nature of power, social divisions and a world in which appearances too often obscure the truth.
