"Taking Off" is a bittersweet comedy in which Forman, with his characteristic humor and truly Czech irony, examines the relationships between parents and their growing children. The plot focuses on the fate of an American married couple, the Tyne's, who set out to search for their teenage daughter after she runs away from home. During their journey through New York's backstreets, they encounter a community of other parents struggling with generational barriers and the confusion of their own children. The film presents a world full of absurdities and surprising plot twists, mercilessly skewering the hypocrisy of adults and the confusion of youth. Forman's work met with enormous acclaim from international critics, winning among others the Grand Prix (Jury Prize) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971 and as many as 6 nominations for British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).
