Classics of Polish silent cinema with live music at Kino Świt (free event)
October 18, 2026, 16:00 · Dom Kultury Świt · ulica Piotra Wysockiego 11
It happens that a film is made almost in the shadow of the events it depicts. Such was the case with "The Miracle on the Vistula" by Ryszard Bolesławski. The picture hit the screens in March 1921, when the Polish-Soviet War was still a vivid memory. Today, on Sunday, October 18, you can see it at Dom Kultury Świt, in the finale of the series "Classics of Polish Silent Cinema with Live Music."
It is a patriotic drama with a love story. Against the backdrop of the dramatic events of 1920, we learn the fates of characters whose lives intertwine with history. The producers took care of a star-studded cast, which included Jadwiga Smosarska, one of the greatest stars of Polish interwar cinema. The film was a great success with audiences of the time, because it spoke about matters that moved almost everyone.
There is also a second reason to see it. The director, Ryszard Bolesławski, left Poland shortly after this film and made a career in Hollywood, where he signed his name to productions such as "Rasputin and the Empress" and "The Painted Veil." "The Miracle on the Vistula" is therefore the only feature-length film he made in Poland.
Only fragments of this picture have survived to our times. Thanks to the digital reconstruction carried out by Filmoteka Narodowa, it can be seen again today on the big screen. The whole will be complemented by music performed live [uzupełnij: wykonawcy i instrumenty], which will give the story rhythm and emotion, and give each screening the character of an event that cannot be repeated.
This is a proposal for history and cinema enthusiasts, for fans of live music, for students and teachers, and for anyone who wants to see with their own eyes how, a hundred years ago, one of the most important events in Poland's history was told. You don't need to know silent cinema. Curiosity is enough.
