Portnoy's Complaint" as a guest at Komuna Warszawa

November 2, 2026, 19:00 · Komuna Warszawa · ulica Emilii Plater 31
Inspired by Philip Roth's novel "Portnoy's Complaint," it is an uncompromising, subversive play full of dark humor. It examines how our family shapes us, the role that parental expectations and social norms play in building identity, and how difficult it can sometimes be to break free from the patterns we inherit from home. Relationships with mother and father, sexuality, complexes, desires, and the need for independence intertwine here into a story about a person trying to understand himself. This is theater that does not seek easy answers and does not spare the audience. Instead, it offers a look at human weaknesses with distance, irony, and a sense of humor. Although it has been present on stage for years, "Portnoy's Complaint" remains surprisingly relevant. Family entanglements, attempts to break free from imposed roles, and the question of how much we ourselves decide who we are do not lose their significance. The play allows us to laugh at what is uncomfortable while also recognizing how many of our personal stories share common roots. Guest performances at Emilii Plater Street open another chapter in the play's presence on the Warsaw theater map. The address changes, but what has defined the strength of the production for years remains: vivid language, courage in tackling difficult topics, and characters in whom one can recognize one's own experiences, fears, and desires.
