Lalka. Reading Warsaw Anew – in Warsaw's green salon
May 22, 2027, 11:00 · Park Łazienki Królewskie · ulica Agrykola 1
Fragments of Bolesław Prus's novel read along the way will allow us to look at the park as the city's green salon, where public meetings had their own unwritten rules.
The fates of Stanisław Wokulski and Izabela Łęcka will become a starting point for a conversation about how Warsaw's social life worked. Wokulski made his fortune, and yet entering Izabela's world required more from him than money. Prus shows this difference in everyday situations – in who talks to whom, who pays visits to whom, and who is considered an equal. Reading in the open air will allow us to look at these small gestures and see how much they said about the characters' place in the city of that time.
The walk will be led by Monika Miżołębska, an art historian, educator and lecturer collaborating with the Muzeum Warszawy and the Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie. The meeting is part of the series "Lalka. Czytamy Warszawę na nowo", which combines reading the novel with getting to know the places immortalized by Prus.
Meeting point – by the Fryderyk Chopin Monument in Łazienki Królewskie.
