10 October /Saturday/ 10:00 Mokotowski Dyskusyjny Klub Książki: Bea Vianen “Surinamie, to ja” Free admission During the 159th meeting of Mokotowski DKK we will talk about Bea Vianen’s book “Surinamie, to ja” (translated by Alicja Oczko, Wydawnictwo ArtRage). “Surinamie, to ja” is a modern classic of Dutch literature and at the same time the first novel in history by an author from Suriname to be published in the Netherlands. The 1950s, a Dutch colony in the Caribbean, a center of social and ethnic turmoil. Sita, a young girl from the East Indies, struggles with her mother’s death and tries to protect herself from her father’s mistakes. She also tries to take care of her younger brother and forge her own life in a rigid, conservative culture. It is a story about a young girl coming of age, but above all about striving to be able to decide for oneself and one’s own life, and about the sacrifices women must make in the fight for their own identity. /publisher’s note/ Link to the event on FB
