“You cannot defeat a dragon if it has settled inside you.” Presentation of a new book shortlisted for the Prosveshcheniye Prize and a public talk with writer Natalya Gromova in Warsaw. Rare archives, an exclusive print run, and a book signing. Natalya Gromova is a prose writer, literary historian, professor at the Free University, and until March 2022 a leading research fellow at the State Literary Museum. Author of numerous studies on the fates and evacuation of 20th-century writers (M. Tsvetaeva, O. Bergholz, B. Pasternak). Finalist for the Russian Booker and Big Book prizes, laureate of the Venets Prize. Her new book about Shvarts has already become a finalist for the Prosveshcheniye Prize. Since April 2022 she has lived in Israel. Evgeny Shvarts wrote fairy tales that prophetically revealed the nature of totalitarianism, fear, and our everyday habit of living alongside a tyrant, what would later be called the “banality of evil.” In an era of ruptures and losses, he restored to people loyalty, friendship, and hope. Natalya Gromova’s book “Evgeny Shvarts. The Life of a Storyteller in the Era of the Dragon” is a deep documentary study of how an artist managed to preserve inner light, dignity, and freedom of thought in the darkest of times. The meeting is structured as a vivid research immersion. Natalya Gromova will not only present her new work, but will also read for the first time excerpts from the unpublished first edition of “The Dragon,” and show rare archival footage and video fragments. After the lecture, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions, take part in a discussion about the nature of free thought in a totalitarian era, and have their author copies signed, which the author will personally bring to the meeting.
