New book: Thomas Pynchon's "Lewy bilet
November 9, 2026, 19:00 · Nowy Teatr · ulica Antoniego Józefa Madalińskiego 10/16
Literary labyrinths, translation challenges and a world where the grotesque meets political horror.
The novel's action begins in 1932. Private detective Hicks McTaggart from Milwaukee receives a suspicious commission that leads him across the Atlantic on the trail of a missing heiress to a fortune. Among spies, gangsters, jazz sounds and increasingly stronger fascist movements, a story unfolds combining noir crime fiction with an eccentric adventure and reflection on the mechanisms of power.
Meeting participants will take a closer look at a writer who consistently eludes readers and interpreters. They will talk about how to translate his prose and how the American author's work finds its place in the Polish context.
