The Trial of Eligiusz Niewiadomski - premiere at the Powszechny

November 11, 2026, 19:00 · Teatr Powszechny · ulica Jana Zamoyskiego 20
The performance had its premiere in 2025 in Kraków, and in a modified form it will be staged in Warsaw — the city where the tragic events unfolded in 1922. The showing of the play in Warsaw takes on particular significance. It was here that the opponents of Gabriel Narutowicz took to the streets. It was in Warsaw that the political and media campaign of hatred grew, leading to the crime, and later it was in the capital that attempts were made to mythologize the figure of Niewiadomski — says Bartosz Szydłowski. The director also emphasizes the significance of showing the play on 11 November: For years, Independence Day has been appropriated by radical circles, becoming an occasion for spreading xenophobic and nationalist slogans and for political self-promotion. I would like “The Trial of Eligiusz Niewiadomski” to go beyond the theatrical framework, and for participation in it to become a joint manifestation against violence and hatred in public life, as well as against the idealization of people who are fanatical and blinded by their ideas - says Szydłowski. The premiere of the play will take place on the Duża Scena of Teatr Powszechny. More on the theatre's website
