Sewing beads from fabric scraps

October 21, 2026, 17:30 · Wypożyczalnia dla Dorosłych i Młodzieży nr 20 · ulica Wawrzyńca Żuławskiego 4/6
October 21 (Wednesday), 5:30-7:00 PM We invite you to sew decorations from fabric scraps. We will sew beads from which we will create pendants, bracelets, or charms, e.g., for bags. Small scraps, a needle, and colorful threads are enough to make beads – they can be used in a thousand ways, whatever your imagination suggests. Sewing techniques from the Far East We will sew by hand – and of course you don't need to be a master. You can improvise or reach for stitches you already know. During the workshops we will use, among others, Far Eastern sewing techniques: boro – the art of stitching together many scraps of fabric. The boro technique originated in 17th-century Japan in poor rural communities. Japanese women sewed successive layers of cotton or hemp onto worn clothing to make it warmer and more durable. sashiko – traditional Japanese embroidery used for decorative (but also functional) reinforcement of fabric. It is a type of simple stitch (running stitch) used to sew layers of fabric in the boro technique or to create geometric, repeating patterns. Traditionally, white cotton thread is used on dark blue (indigo-dyed) fabric. Red thread can also be used. gindi – a traditional embroidery and hand-sewing technique originating from South Asian culture (India and Pakistan). The basic stitch is the so-called running stitch. In the gindi technique, stitches are placed very close together in parallel lines, creating a dense texture. Traditionally, this technique is used to join several layers of old fabrics (e.g., from old saris) to create quilted blankets, throws, or shawls. Get to know these techniques. Maybe they will also come in handy in everyday life? Or maybe you will discover a passion for hand sewing? It's not impossible! Link to the article on the Library's website Link to the event on FB
