October 9 (Friday) 7:00 PM–8:00 PM [Meeting for adults] It is good that Roman Rostek's book has been published, although it is not known whether "someone's book can prepare us for our challenges" and "whether someone else's words will seriously explain anything to us in such important and serious matters" – as Remigiusz Okraska of "Nowy Obywatel" wrote in his review. Oncological illness can happen to anyone, so perhaps it is worth thinking about. What is the book "Rytuał przejścia" about? "Rytuał przejścia" is a story based on experiences from the time of illness. It is a multidimensional story of coping with a traumatic situation. The experience of weakness and helplessness is here the starting point for departing from routine and looking at everything from a new perspective. Illness opens doors for the narrator to places he would never have visited and to stories he would never have heard. Whether it is a priest with whom one can hold theological disputes, or a gangster reminiscing about his golden criminal years – everyone in the hospital room appears on equal terms, without social masks. Life is described in the full richness of colors, humor mixes with suffering, close relationships in the community of patients with the loneliness of experiencing illness, and helplessness in the face of hospital procedures and bureaucracy – with the instinct to survive at any cost. Who is Roman Rostek? Roman Rostek is a sociologist by education and a management consultant by profession, ethnographically analyzing organizations. He is also a football fan. He has been writing and publishing for many years in socio-political and industry magazines (e.g. Nowy Obywatel, Równość, Harvard Business Review Polska, Rzeczpospolita). He is a Wrocław resident, but regularly visits Starachowice thanks to his wife, who comes from there. Link to the article on the Library's website Link to the event on FB
